Placing women rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. In 2014, UN Women started working in Kuwait as a non-resident agency and will pursue this modality in countries where there is no programme or office presence, including in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Complementing this is work with national actors to support women engagement in peace-making, peacekeeping, recovery and prevention of violent extremism (PVE) throughout the region.

This is an integrated programme that targets both displaced Syrian women and girls and host-country nationals across Iraq, Jordan, and Turkey.

In Iraq, the programme additionally targets displaced Iraqi women, affected by the current conflict.

It works to address the call of the European Union Regional Trust Fund to the Syria Crisis (EU MADAD) to, inter alia, involve women in crisis prevention, conflict management, peacebuilding and to help protect women in gender-based violence, especially sexual abuses. The programme works at multiple levels to:Enable women empowerment through addressing issues of economic vulnerability and violence by increased access to recovery and livelihood opportunities, paired with comprehensive protection services and support to national justice structures to promote accountability for violence against women;Promote a culture of peace and co-existence through supporting women to lead and engage in peacebuilding, reconciliation and conflict prevention;Engage men as partners, champions, and advocates for women increased empowerment, including their engagement in the labour market.
